What is it they call freedom of expression?

India remains till date the largest democracy in the world. This political right entails every Indian to follow his free will and word. This is a prerequisite for a country to patronize its artists and India has had a resident heritage of fine artistry. In a land where epitomes of divinity, awe, gratitude and love stand tall in the glory of their creators, however, it is pitious to note about what happened to M.F. Hussain, the world renowned Indian painter.
His fault, that he painted Indian deities stripped off their cosmetic belongings, has landed him in an exile. Nudity or not, but it was an expression, a prayer of a theist for his Almighty. God never wanted a piece of everything from everybody but He sure wanted that in His world, everybody do his part best and offer it submissively to Him (usurp from Shreemadbaghvadgeeta, the most sacred book in Indian spirituality). An artist could not have made a better offering than the devoted fluid strokes of his brush. While some of the most pious temples and shrines in India are so full of nude idols of gods and angels carved in stone and yet remain the most sacred of places, the fate that has befallen the maestro like Hussain is sorry indeed. If an artist must live in a constant fear of being punished for his art in a democratic country, we ought to introspect where we are headed.
